MARTA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT
TO SUSTAINABILITY WITH EARTH WEEK EVENTS
ATLANTA
- The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) showcases its
commitment to sustainability this Earth Week with two free, family-friendly
events on Saturday, April 20, that highlight the Authority’s environmentally
conscious community programs and its continued transition to electric vehicles.
Nationally recognized for its sustainability efforts, MARTA strives to provide
services and implement programs that encourage healthy habits for people and
the planet.
MARTA,
in collaboration with Global Growers will host an educational event at the
Global Growers Community Garden located at Indian Creek Station. This event
will highlight the importance of community gardening, sustainable agriculture,
and environmental stewardship. Spend the day learning about pollinators,
touring the farm with the East African women who run it, and enjoy live
performances and lawn games among the greenery. Guests are encouraged to bring
their own picnic blankets or lawn chairs.

Also
on Saturday, April 20, MARTA will partner with the City of Atlanta Office of
Sustainability and Resilience and Clean Cities Georgia to commemorate Drive
Electric Earth Day. The event held at West End Mall features electric vehicles,
including an electric MARTA bus, food trucks, and children’s’ activities.

MARTA’s bus fleet is primarily comprised of
electric and compressed natural gas buses, with trains and streetcars powered
by electricity, and free electric vehicle charging at stations, park and rides,
and employee facilities.
MARTA’s Station Rehabilitation Program
which includes the current Airport Station Project, uses only energy-efficient
materials, leading to healthier stations for customers and alleviating
significant day-to-day maintenance issues and costs.
MARTA continues to
be a strong community partner, implementing programs such as MARTA Markets that
bring fresh produce to rail stations in food “deserts,” building soccer pitches
at rail stations for a citywide youth soccer league, and partnering with
growers to establish community gardens and farms such as the Global Growers
farm where Saturday’s event is being held.
