MARTA CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW CLAYTON COUNTY TRANSIT CENTER
Public Health Measures in Place for Ribbon-Cutting, Community Painting Event Scheduled for Saturday
ATLANTA – The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and Clayton County will celebrate the opening of a new bus transit hub at the Clayton County Justice Center in Jonesboro on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting and community paint day. Refreshments, painting supplies, and personal protection equipment such as masks, gloves, and hand-washing stations will be provided.
Phase one of transit improvements at the Clayton County Justice Center include moving bus stop operations from Post Way to within the center’s northwest parking lot. The new transit hub will serve four bus routes with 800 daily riders. It features enhanced bus stops and shelters, park and ride spaces, and improved walkways and crosswalks.
MARTA’s public art program Artbound engaged local artist George F. Baker, III to design artwork that has been translated into stencils the community will use to paint concrete barriers between the buses and bus shelters. Long-term projects include building a multipurpose Operations and Maintenance Facility in the county, establishing bus rapid transit (BRT) that would encompass portions of two of the Authority’s busiest bus routes, 196 and 191, and commuter rail from East Point to Lovejoy along the Norfolk Southern rail corridor.
